IGOR SIKORSKY MEMORIAL AIRPORT HANGAR COMPLEX
The Bridgeport, Connecticut airport is uniquely situated and thus has unique challenges. Owned by the City of Bridgeport, but surrounded by the Town of Stratford make this airport a political issue. Combine that with the limited airport property and this gem located equidistant to the business and education centers of Connecticut provide great opportunity. There are currently multiple projects being undertaken at this airport, including the restoration of an original Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company hangar. This wooden roofed hangar has shown neglect and partially collapsed. However, the individual glass panes and brick facade remain relatively in tact.
While the expansion of the airport make development problematic, the need continued for a luxury FBO building that was befitting the wealthiest county in America. A new FBO hangar was completed in 2010 that utilizes the latest building materials and techniques for energy efficiency. Its occupants have redefined the airport and attracted new clients to the airport. Work will continue on this diamond in the rough.
